What Is Amazon Net PPM? Formula, Calculation & Metric Explained

Learn why tracking Net PPM is essential for Amazon vendors, how to calculate it, & ways to improve your profit margins with automation tools like iNymbus.

Amazon does not buy your products because customers want them. Amazon buys your products because Amazon makes money on them.

That distinction runs through every vendor negotiation, every PO decision, and every conversation with your Vendor Manager. The number behind it is Net PPM, and it is the closest thing Amazon has to a verdict on whether your catalog is worth stocking. Products with strong Net PPM get inventory, placement, and PO growth. Products with weak Net PPM get flagged as CRaP, lose visibility, and eventually get dropped.

Most vendors track their own margin closely and never look at Amazon's. That is the gap this article closes.

    What Is Net PPM?

Net PPM stands for Net Pure Profit Margin. It is Amazon's gross profit calculation on the products you supply, expressed as a percentage of shipped revenue.

The metric factors in what Amazon pays you, what Amazon earns from your vendor terms, and what Amazon gives back to customers through discounts. It deliberately excludes Amazon's own operating costs like fulfillment, shipping, and storage, which makes it a measure of pure product-level profitability rather than total channel profitability.

Amazon's retail teams use Net PPM to rank your products against every other option available to them. That ranking drives PO volume, inventory investment, and whether your items survive the next catalog review.

Amazon The Net PPM Formula Explained

Net PPM is calculated using some key numbers from your Amazon business. First, look at your Shipped Revenue, which is the total money received for shipped products. Next, subtract your Shipped COGS (Cost of Goods Sold), which covers the direct costs of getting products ready to ship.

Then add any CCOGS (additional relevant costs), which might include other shipping or logistics fees. Finally, subtract Sales Discounts—these are promotions, coupons, or any price reductions offered to customers.

Net PPM is calculated at both the account level and the individual ASIN level.

    At the account level:

Net PPM = (Shipped Revenue − Shipped COGS + Vendor Terms − Sales Discount) ÷ Shipped Revenue

    At the ASIN level:

Net PPM = (Average Selling Price − Cost Price + Vendor Terms − Sales Discount) ÷ Average Selling Price

    What Each Component Means

Component Definition Effect on Net PPM
Shipped Revenue Total revenue Amazon generated from the products you shipped Base of the calculation
Shipped COGS What Amazon paid you for those products Decreases
Vendor Terms (Contra-COGS) Co-op, accruals, damage allowance, freight allowance, and other vendor funding that Amazon receives Increases
Sales Discount Coupons, promotions, and price reductions are provided to customers with Amazon funds Decreases

The component vendors most often misunderstand is Vendor Terms, also called Contra-COGS. This is not a cost to Amazon. It is money flowing from you to Amazon through co-op agreements and accruals, and it makes Amazon's margin on your products look better.

That relationship matters more than most vendors realize. Every dollar of co-op you fund increases Amazon's Net PPM on your catalog. If your co-op data is not flowing into the calculation correctly, your Net PPM appears lower than it actually is, and you walk into your annual negotiation looking less profitable than you are.

Why Net PPM is More ImportantThan Your Own Margin

Your margin determines whether the Amazon channel is worth running. Amazon's margin determines whether Amazon keeps buying from you.

Annual Vendor Negotiations: Net PPM is the number your Vendor Manager brings to AVN. Vendors with strong Net PPM negotiate from a position of strength. Vendors with weak Net PPM face pressure on cost price, expanded co-op demands, or both.

CRaP-out risk: Amazon flags products it cannot profit from as CRaP, short for "Can't Realize a Profit." CRaP products get deprioritized in search, lose Buy Box eligibility, get moved to Sold by Amazon only when in stock, and eventually get delisted entirely.

PO volume and inventory investment: Amazon allocates working capital toward products that generate margin. Low Net PPM items get smaller POs, slower replenishment, and reduced forecast allocation.

Category ranking: Net PPM is measured against category peers, not against an absolute standard. A 15 percent Net PPM might be strong in electronics and weak in beauty.

    Net PPM Benchmarks by Category

Healthy Net PPM varies significantly by product category. Amazon's expectations reflect the typical margin structure of each vertical.

    Category Typical Net PPM Benchmark
Consumer Electronics 5 to 15 percent
Grocery and Consumables 10 to 20 percent
Home and Kitchen 15 to 25 percent
Health and Personal Care 20 to 30 percent
    Beauty 25 to 40 percent
    Apparel 30 to 45 percent

Where to Find Net PPM in Vendor Central

Net PPM data lives in the Retail Analytics section of Vendor Central.

Standard path: Vendor Central > Reports > Retail Analytics > Net PPM

The dedicated Net PPM report shows PPM percentage by product across daily, weekly, and monthly views.

There is a caveat worth knowing. As of early 2026, the Net PPM report interface has had reliability problems, and several analytics providers recommend pulling the data from the Sales report instead.

Alternative path: Vendor Central > Reports > Sales > Sourcing view > Customize columns

The Sales report in Sourcing view lets you add optional columns for every element of the Net PPM formula, which gives you the full calculation rather than just the output percentage. Select Sales Discount and Contra-COGS when customizing columns to see the complete picture.

How Deductions and Co-op Distort Your Net PPM

This is where Net PPM connects directly to your deduction management process.

Vendor Terms sit inside the Net PPM formula as a positive contributor to Amazon's margin. Co-op deductions, accruals, damage allowances, and freight allowances all flow into that line. When those charges are applied correctly, they raise your Net PPM and strengthen your position at AVN.

The problem is that co-op data does not always flow correctly. Common failure modes:

Co-op paid but not credited: you fund a program, and the deduction hits your remittance, but the corresponding Contra-COGS credit does not appear in the Net PPM calculation. Amazon captures the money, and you get no margin credit for it.

Rate mismatches: Amazon applies a co-op percentage that does not match your Vendor Manager Agreement, distorting both your actual cost and the reported Net PPM.

Duplicate deductions: the same co-op charge is applied twice across categories or remittance cycles, inflating your real cost without proportional margin credit.

Timing gaps: co-op is deducted in one period and credited in another, making Net PPM look volatile month over month for reasons unrelated to actual product performance.

The financial impact runs in both directions. Invalid deductions cost you cash directly. Uncredited co-op costs you negotiating leverage. Both are recoverable if you reconcile deductions against your VMA terms and dispute the discrepancies within Amazon's window.

How to Improve Your Amazon Net PPM

Improving Net PPM means improving Amazon's margin on your products. Five levers move the number.

    Raise Amazon's Selling Price

Higher retail price with the same cost price directly increases Net PPM. This works best where your brand supports the price point, and competing offers do not undercut you. Amazon controls retail pricing, but you influence it through MAP enforcement, promotional discipline, and reducing marketplace price erosion.

    Reduce Sales Discounts

Coupons, Lightning Deals, and promotional funding all subtract from Net PPM. Audit which promotions actually drive incremental volume versus which ones discount sales that would have happened anyway.

Verify Your Vendor Terms Are Credited Correctly

Every dollar of co-op you fund should appear as Contra-COGS in the Net PPM calculation. Reconcile your remittance deductions against your Net PPM report. Discrepancies here are common and frequently favor the brand once corrected.

Shift Sales Mix Toward High-PPM Products

You cannot always raise margin on low-PPM items, but you can shift volume toward higher-PPM items using sponsored ads, deals, and off-Amazon media. Sales mix improvements move account-level Net PPM without any change to individual product economics.

    Negotiate Cost Price Increases Strategically

Cost price increases reduce Net PPM directly, which makes them a hard conversation. Bringing a full Net PPM picture to AVN, including verified co-op credit, gives you the data to defend a cost increase with evidence rather than argument.

    New call-to-action

Protect Your Net PPM with Accurate Deduction Recovery

Net PPM is only as accurate as the co-op and accrual data feeding it. Deductions that get applied incorrectly, duplicated, or never credited back distort the number you bring into every Amazon negotiation.

iNymbus reconciles Amazon deductions against your Vendor Manager Agreement, flags the invalid ones, and files disputes within Amazon's 30-day window. Vendors recover deductions up to 30 times faster than manual processes and cut cost per claim by 80 to 90 percent.
