    Quick Answer

To dispute a Target shortage or damage deduction, first check whether it is valid. Compare your PO, invoice, ASN, BOL, POD, and Target's receiving data. If your records show Target received what you shipped, submit a dispute in Synergy with the right deduction reason, amount, receipt number, and supporting documents.

What Are Target Shortage and Damage Deductions?

Target shortage and damage deductions are amounts Target takes from supplier payments when it says the received goods differ from the invoice. The cause is usually missing cartons, missing units, or damaged or defective product.

These deductions are more than accounting line items. They are recovery events that directly affect your cash flow and invoice-to-cash cycle. A small deduction left unchallenged can become a recurring loss across thousands of shipments.

    In this article, we'll cover:

    • What Target shortage and damage deductions are
    • Which deduction codes suppliers should check
    • How to validate a deduction before disputing
    • What evidence proves a Target deduction is wrong
    • How to dispute A030, A032, and A034 specifically
    • How to submit and follow up on a dispute in Synergy

Which Target Deduction Codes Should Suppliers Check?

Three codes cover most shortage and damage disputes.

    Code

    Meaning

    What Target is saying

    A030

    Carton Shortage

Received cartons were fewer than invoiced cartons

    A032

    Damaged or Defective

The invoice and receipt gap is mainly due to damaged or defective product

    A034

    Unit/Internal Shortage or Case Pack

Units were short, or case pack did not match

    A176

    Carton Shortage (related)

Verify against the current Target code list

For the full code list, see our Target deduction codes guide and Target deduction prefixes guide.

    Validating a Target Shortage Deduction

Trace the shipment from start to finish:

    PO → Invoice → ASN (EDI 856) → BOL/POD → Target receiving record

If every step agrees and only Target's receiving record is lower, the deduction may be invalid. If your own ASN or invoice does not match what was packed, the deduction may be valid.

Disputing wastes time blindly and can weaken your case on future claims. Before you dispute, check these five things:

    • Does the deduction quantity match Target's receiving data?
    • Does your ASN support the quantity you shipped, and was it sent error-free within one hour of trailer close?
    • Do the BOL and POD support the shipment?
    • Does the deduction match the event the code describes?
    • Are you accidentally disputing a valid shortage or damage claim?

     Target Shortage vs. Damage Deductions

    Shortage

    Damage

    Core question

Did Target receive fewer units or cartons than shipped or invoiced?

Was the product actually damaged or defective, and when and where did it happen?

    Main proof

    Quantity records

Condition and chain of custody records

This matters most for A032. Quantity documents alone will rarely beat a damage claim.

What Evidence Proves a Target Deduction Is Wrong?

"Attach supporting documents" is not enough. Know what each document proves.

    Document

    What it helps prove

    PO

    What Target originally ordered

    Invoice

What quantity and cost you billed

    ASN / EDI 856

    What you reported as shipped

    Packing slip

    What was packed

    BOL

What was handed to the carrier. It should list cartons or pallets and weight by PO, with totals

    Proof of shipment (collect)

That freight left your dock on a Target-arranged carrier

    POD (prepaid)

    What was delivered

    Store sticker (Direct to Store)

Proof of delivery for store deliveries. Keep it in case you need to dispute

    Receiving record

    What Target says it received

    Damage photos

    Condition of the merchandise

    Return documentation

    Whether goods were actually returned

    Case-pack documentation

Correct units per carton or case

How to Dispute Target A030 Carton Shortage

A030 applies when invoiced cartons exceed received cartons.

    Build your case with:

Focus on carton counts. If the BOL and POD match your invoice, the receiving count is the point to challenge.

How to Dispute Target A032 Damaged or Defective

A032 applies when the difference is mainly attributed to damaged or defective goods.

    Build your case with:

    • Shipping documents and invoice
    • PO
    • Damage documentation or photos
    • BOL and freight records
    • Proof of return, where applicable

Show that goods left in good condition, or that the claimed damage does not match the event. Keep receiving damage separate from later store returns or defective product events.

How to Dispute Target A034 Unit Shortage

A034 applies to unit shortages or case-pack issues.

    Build your case with:

    • Invoice
    • Packing slip
    • PO
    • Case-pack documentation
    • ASN
    • Target receiving information

Check that units per case on your ASN match the PO and your packing records.

How to Submit a Target Deduction Dispute

Target handles supplier disputes through Synergy, accessed via Partners Online (POL). Confirm current steps in the Target supplier portal, since details can change.

    1. Research the deduction in POL first. Enter document numbers exactly as they appear in Target's system, including leading zeros and letters.
    2. Open a dispute in Synergy and select the correct dispute reason.
    3. Enter the amount and receipt number. File one claim per dispute.
    4. Attach your supporting documents.
    5. Submit, then monitor your dashboard for status changes.

What If Target Rejects the Dispute?

A rejection is not always final.

    1. Read the rejection reason carefully.
    2. Identify which evidence was missing or unclear.
    3. Check for an "awaiting vendor info" status. It means Target needs more information on your case.
    4. Compare Target's response against your shipment records.
    5. Add clarification or resubmit where the process allows.
    6. Track the deduction until it is resolved.

Deduction or Compliance Chargeback? Check the Prefix

Not every Target charge is handled the same way. Vendor compliance chargebacks, such as Fill Rate Original, start with "VC" and are disputed in Synergy within a 3-month chargeback review period. After that window closes, the chargeback is final.

If your charge starts with something other than "VC," Target directs you to the department that issued it, usually Accounts Payable. Check the prefix before you build your case.

    Target Deduction Recovery with iNymbus

Target shortage and damage deductions are more than payment adjustments. They are disputes that directly affect cash flow and supplier profitability. Small mismatches in quantity, condition, or documentation can become significant losses if not challenged early.

Manual deduction handling often causes more problems than it solves. Teams pull spreadsheets, log into multiple portals, and chase documents across emails just to validate a single A030 or A032 claim. As deduction volumes grow, these manual steps become bottlenecks, and valid disputes slip past the filing window.

With a platform like iNymbus, suppliers can:

Centralize deduction data: All Target deductions, dispute statuses, and recovery outcomes live in one place. This reduces the need to switch between POL, Synergy, and spreadsheets.

Validate deductions early: Instead of reviewing claims after payment is taken, automation flags invalid deductions as soon as they post, so teams act within the dispute window.

Link documentation automatically: Invoices, ASNs, BOLs, PODs, and receiving records stay attached to each dispute. Teams access them instantly when building a case.

Standardize dispute workflows: Rules-based automation prepares and submits disputes with the correct reason codes, amounts, and evidence, reducing manual tracking.

Most recoveries come down to speed and proof. Suppliers who validate early and keep clean shipment records win more disputes. Automation brings clarity, early detection of invalid deductions, and consistent documentation.

Teams that adopt structured approaches and automation see more recoveries, better financial alignment, and a smoother invoice-to-cash cycle. As deduction volumes grow, these benefits compound.
