Trade allowances are one of the few deductions suppliers agree to in advance. You negotiate a promotion, a scan-down, a pickup arrangement, or a slotting fee, and the retailer collects that funding by deducting it from your payments. Because the deduction was expected, it rarely gets a second look.
That is exactly where money leaks. The amount deducted depends on how the retailer's system calculated the allowance, not on what you signed.
At Kroger, allowance deductions arrive under several invoice formats, route to different contacts, and follow their own dispute rules. This guide explains each type, how to recognize it on your remittance, and how to dispute the ones that do not match your agreement.
What Is a Kroger Allowance Deduction?
A Kroger allowance deduction is trade funding Kroger collects by reducing your payment. It covers promotional support, scan-down funding, pickup allowances, slotting contracts, and coupon settlements negotiated with Kroger's merchandising and category teams.
Allowance deductions differ from shortage or compliance deductions in one important way: the charge itself is usually legitimate. What goes wrong is the calculation. A promotion billed at the wrong rate, on the wrong items, or outside the agreed dates produces a deduction that looks routine but overcharges you.
In Supplier Connect, Kroger's supplier dispute and remittance platform, allowance activity appears in two places on each invoice: the Promotions grid, which shows promotion information tied to the invoice, and the Deductions grid, which shows every deduction applied against it.
Types of Kroger Allowances
Kroger collects several kinds of trade funding through deductions:
- Promotional allowances: funding for temporary price reductions, ads, displays, and in-store events, billed against the promotion terms loaded in Kroger's systems
- Off-invoice allowances: discounts taken directly against the invoice for agreed promotional periods
- Scan-downs: per-unit funding billed on units scanned at the register during a promotion window
- KATS billings: promotional billings generated through Kroger's KATS promotion system
- KOMPASS deductions: promotional billings processed through Kroger's KOMPASS program, which routes to their own contact
- Pickup allowances: freight allowances applied when Kroger handles pickup or transportation
- Slotting contracts: fees billed under slotting agreements for new item placement
- Coupon settlements: electronic, manufacturer, and NCH coupon redemptions and fees
Each type is billed under a distinct invoice format, which is the most reliable way to identify it.
How to Identify an Allowance Deduction by Invoice Format
Kroger's deduction contact list maps every invoice format on the check stub to a deduction type and a contact. In the formats below, ddd is the 3-digit Kroger division identifier and # stands for a digit.

Two details trip suppliers up often. First, a 092-A invoice can be either a standard promotional allowance or a KOMPASS deduction, and only the invoice comment tells you which.
Second, the DEAL format replaced the older promo billing system for suppliers converted to Kroger's modernized warehouse systems, so the same promotion can look different depending on which DC network shipped the product.
Code 2: Promotional Allowance Difference
When Kroger's system calculates a promotional amount that differs from what the supplier expected, the deduction falls under Code 2: Promotional Allowance Difference. It covers several invoice codes:
- OI: off-invoice allowance
- NA: net allowance
- KSD, KSI, KSP, KSR: KATS promotional system errors
- PC, PSD, PSI, PSP, PSR: scan and coupon promotional errors
What triggers it: the promotional terms in Kroger's system did not match what the system calculated during the promotion window.
Common root causes:
- Promotion terms loaded late or after the event started
- Rates or amounts entered incorrectly
- Promotion dates that do not match the executed event window
- Item-level pricing or item setup not synced with the promotion
The last cause deserves attention. Item setup errors frequently resurface as KATS promotional errors because the promotion is applied to an item record that does not match what shipped. When the same SKU produces repeated Code 2 deductions, the fix is in the item record, not the individual claim.
Code 9: Pickup Allowance
Code 9: Pickup Allowance covers deductions for freight allowances Kroger applies when it handles pickup or transportation of your product. These deductions carry the PU invoice code.
Pickup allowance errors usually come from a mismatch between the pickup arrangement in your agreement and the rate or shipments Kroger billed against. Disputes rely on the invoice and shipping documents showing which pickup arrangement was agreed and which shipments it applied to.
Where Allowance Deductions Route
Routing is the first check on any Kroger deduction. A claim submitted through the wrong channel can be closed automatically without review, and the clock keeps running while you refile.
For allowances, the rules are:
- Standard promotional allowances (ddd-A), DEAL billings, slotting (092-S), and electronic coupons (060-C): Supplier Connect
- KOMPASS deductions (092-A with KOMPASS on the invoice): partnerportal@kroger.com
- RC and C coupon billings: Inmar
- Coupon fees and NCH coupons: review details in Supplier Connect first, then send questions to kashcoupons@kroger.com
One legacy note: requests that suppliers used to send to RASCpromo@kroger.com now go through Supplier Connect. If your team's runbook still lists that address, update it.
Post-Audit Claims on Allowances
Allowances are a common target of retroactive audits, which can produce deductions months after a promotion ended and was paid. Kroger's post-audit deductions route by invoice format:
- ddd-H#### (Connolly Consulting / Cotiviti): krogercorrespondence@cotiviti.com
- ddd-R######### (PRGX): kroger.east@prgx.com
- ddd-V#### (internal Kroger post audit): kroger.reclaim@prgx.com
Post-audit claims do not go through the standard Supplier Connect dispute path. Check the prefix before responding.
Where to Find Allowance Detail in Supplier Connect
Supplier Connect gives you the backup you need to check an allowance deduction:
- Go to Transactions, then the Invoices tab, and search for the invoice
- Open the invoice to view its details page
- Review the Promotions grid for the promotion information tied to the invoice
- Review the Deductions grid for every deduction applied; this grid can be exported, with a limit of 20,000 rows
- Use Payment Details or switch to the Payments view to see how the deduction hit the payment
Coupon deductions have their own tab under Transactions. That view is informational: it shows the coupon manufacturer number, manufacturer name, and associated coupon invoices, but no dispute action can be taken from it.
How to Dispute a Kroger Allowance Deduction
Once you have confirmed the deduction belongs in Supplier Connect, the dispute follows a consistent sequence.
- Confirm the format and routing: match the invoice number to the table above
- Pull the agreement: locate the promotion, pickup, or slotting agreement that governs the charge
- Recalculate the allowance: compare the rate, items, dates, and quantities billed against the agreement
- Select the correct claim type: OI maps to Code 2 and PU maps to Code 9; the wrong claim type leads to denial
- Attach documentation: submit the evidence listed below with the dispute, not afterward
- Submit and monitor: track the claim through Open, Pending, Pending Update, and Closed
Documentation for Code 2 disputes: the promotional agreement, the invoice, the promotional flyer, the execution recap, and item-level data showing what was agreed.
Documentation for Code 9 disputes: the invoice, shipping documents, and the pickup allowance agreement.
Two process rules prevent avoidable losses. A comment or message on an invoice does not start a dispute review; file a formal claim. And watch the Pending Update status closely, since it means Kroger is waiting on your response, and claims that sit without a reply close without further review.
How to Prevent Allowance Deductions From Going Wrong
Most allowance errors are set up before the promotion starts. A few habits remove the bulk of them:
- Load and confirm promotion terms before the event begins: rates, dates, and items should match the signed agreement
- Validate item setup at creation: mismatched item records are a leading source of KATS errors
- Keep execution evidence: save flyers, execution recaps, and item-level data for every promotion
- Know which network ships each order: DEAL billings apply to modernized warehouse divisions, standard promotional billings to the rest
- Review allowance deductions monthly by format: recurring errors on the same promotion type or SKU point to a setup problem
Catch Allowance Overcharges Before They Become Write-Offs
Allowance deductions are expected, which is why overcharges hide inside them. Recovering those overcharges means checking each deduction against its agreement, routing it to the right contact, and filing with complete backup before the window closes.
iNymbus automates that work for Kroger suppliers. It pulls deduction and promotion detail from Supplier Connect, matches each allowance to its supporting records, routes KOMPASS, coupon, and post-audit claims to the correct contacts, and files disputes with the right claim type, alongside deductions from 52+ other retailers.
